EMDR
Trauma
What is this technique?
EMDR is a recognized therapy for addressing emotional difficulties related to traumatic events, stress, and painful memories.
It has a strong scientific backing for its effectiveness. It has been shown to be especially effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as in situations such as phobias, panic attacks, and unresolved grief.
The EMDR technique posits that the brain has an innate healing system for psychological pain. However, when we feel overwhelmed, this natural process can become blocked, making it difficult for the brain to process traumatic events effectively.
How does the technique work?
During an EMDR session, the traumatic memory network is activated while stimulating both hemispheres of the brain.
Essentially, this process helps to calm the nervous system and dissociate past events or situations from distressing emotional responses, thereby neutralizing the emotional reaction associated with those memories.
